Stained Glass Window (Creativity and Maths)

Stained Glass Window

Wednesday 23rd May dawned bright and sunny, today the children were going to see for the first time the results of their hard work over the last five months.  They had invited guests including past Headteachers, people who had helped them over the last few months as well as dignitaries from the County Education Department.  The local papers and television were due as well!!

The children of Class 3, aged 6,7 and 8 had been exploring maths in a creative way as part of a research project funded by Creative Action Research Awards (CARA) led by their teacher Mrs Jackie Heath.  Working with a local stained glass artist Jane Elder and a mathematician Marion Gatrell from Plymouth University, they had designed a window for the school’s entrance porch which would reflect the ethos of the school.  As part of their work they visited The House of Marbles to see how glass is made and watch glass blowers at work.  Back in class the children learnt how to measure 3mm as well as shape and area.  Eventually the children came up with a collaborative design which reflected all their ideas and the work that they do in school.  Paignton Glass very kindly glazed the finished window in a double glazed unit so that it safe and football proof!  Nick Brodie also gave his time and labour free of charge to make a new frame for the window and help with it’s fitting.

The day was amazing. The children’s smiling faces when the window was revealed said it all.  They were so proud of all their hard work. They love the idea that this window will be there long after they have left the school.  They were a credit to the school when they talked to the reporters both for the newspaper and the local television.  Since then four children have been to a conference for Devon Primary Headteachers in Exeter where they talked to everyone about their window.  Some of these children would never had had the confidence to do this six months ago but because of the CARA project and the way that they feel about their work they are now able to share their thoughts and ideas with complete strangers!
